Storms and strong winds can damage storm dunes and push them inland. Other that storms, the other major cause of damage to dunes is people. By walking or playing on sand dunes, we damage the beach grass and other plants that hold the dune together. So please, KEEP OFF THE DUNES!

Why should you stay off dunes?
Walking on dunes can destroy the plants that hold them together. Without these plants, wind would erode the sand off the dune, diminishing its effectiveness as a natural barrier. This is why it is so important to stay off the dunes and always use designated dune walkways.
Why do you turn parallel at the top of a dune?
Just before you reach the top of the dune, you need to turn so that you’re driving parallel to the ridge. This lets you peak over to spot other riders’ flags and gives them a chance to see yours. When you’re confident that there’s nothing and no one to crash into, you can head over the top and head down.
How do you drive a sand dune?
Gain momentum before starting to go up the dune. During the ascent keep your speed up to downshift. Go up, if possible, on the axis of the slope. If you ride diagonally, make sure your speed is high enough to play with gravity, because the weight of the car will pull you down the dune.
Are wider tires better in sand?
Having a wide tire with tall sidewalls that can spread out with reduced air pressure is as good as it gets, or so some say. They also say that a less aggressive tread does better in sand than something like a mud tire.
Are sand dunes bad for side by sides?

What determines the size of a dune?
The size of a dune is mainly a function of sand supply: the larger the supply from the beach, the higher the dunes. Prevailing wind directions, beach width and time available to build a dune are part of the sand supply picture. Most important however is the sand available from the sea.
How do you know if a sand dune is healthy?
More acidic systems will support wet heath communities in slacks and lichen-dominated communities on drier fixed dunes, which appear grey. Prickly saltwort, sea rocket, oraches or sea sandwort growing along the strandline are good indicators of a healthy sand dune system.
How does sand get into the sand dune?
Beach debris slows down the wind or blocks it, causing sand to accumulate in the wind “shadow” of the object. Eventually, dune grass seeds (especially Sea Oats) find their way to the new piles of sand, germinate, sprout and trap more sand.
How does wind affect sand dunes?
In places, the wind can push the sand away to form a hollow and, if this meets water, dune slacks can develop and may support particularly rich wetland vegetation. Although usually found on flat coastlines, sand dunes can also be found “climbing” cliffs where onshore winds are strong.
