Why is iron not used in coins?
Copper was used to make shells, and other common coin alloys were also used in military works – tin, zinc and nickel. Because iron readily oxidizes with oxygen, these coins have suffered in the intervening decades. Today, iron coins with their designs obscured by corrosion and rust are normal.

Why are coins made of steel?
The metals used to make coins are specifically chosen to serve long term. Coins have a purpose and some special requirements based on the conditions they will encounter. While nickel is also magnetic, there isn’t enough nickel in standard United States coins to make them magnetic. Even the five-cent coin, widely called a “nickel,” is only 25% nickel, with the balance made from copper. Therefore, U.S. five-cent coins don’t stick to magnets despite their nickel composition.
Is a 2p coin made from copper?
