Why does a bad egg float in water whereas a good one sinks?
Fresh eggs sink because they are more dense than water. Bad eggs float because they are less dense than water. As an egg ages, the yolk and white start to decompose. Instead, what happens is that some of the gases inside the egg escape through tiny pores in the shell.
What to do with floating eggs?
If the egg stay at the bottom – it is fresh. If the egg is at an angle on the bottom – it is still fresh and good to eat. If the egg stands on its pointed end at the bottom – it is still safe to eat but best used for baking and making hard-cooked eggs. If the egg float – they’re stale and best discarded.
Why does a bad egg float?

When eggs float in water; it means the weight of the egg is smaller compared to that of water. Scientifically; it means the water is denser than the egg.
How to check if eggs are rotten?

Do eggs float when they are bad?
While it’s been said that means the eggs have gone bad and should be thrown out, a floating egg does not necessarily equal a bad egg. Eggs have an air cell that becomes larger as the egg ages and acts as a buoyancy aid. An egg can float in water when its air cell has enlarged sufficiently to keep it buoyant.
How do you test for Bad Eggs?
The bowl test is considered to be the simplest way to perform an egg freshness test. Usually, a bad egg can be determined without completely breaking the shell. It’s harder to crack because the membrane has become tough.
