Who owns Rock City now?
Mountain, opened their personal estate as a public attraction during the Great Depression on May 21, 1932. Rock City Gardens has remained in the family of Garnet and Frieda Carter, currently under third-generation ownership.

Garnet Carter’s idea was to develop a residential neighborhood on top of the mountain. Garnet realized that Frieda had made an attraction that people would be willing to pay for to see. Garnet made Rock City a public attraction in 1932.
How was Rock City made?
The sandstone was formed mainly from sand deposited along the edge of a sea that covered the western half of Kansas about 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. Over time, the sand was buried and then compressed and cemented into solid rock.
