Who invented the diamond kite?

In 1891, William A. Eddy, inspired by a Japanese design, invented a diamond-shaped kite, which did not need a tail. In 1893, Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite, resembling two or more open-ended boxes connected to a wooden frame.

What is an eddy kite?
In the 1890’s, Eddy developed an efficient, stable, cruciform-shaped kite, able to be flown without a tail. By using a flexible crosspiece (spar), the kite would bow in the wind thus acting like a ship’s keel in water.
How does the diamond kite fly?
The flying line holds the kite so that it will not fly away in the wind. The bridle connects the flying line to the kite at two points. The actual flying line is connected to the bridle at its tow point. The bridle sets the angle of the kite in the wind.

The only men who survived were Eddy and William Foster (he of the borrowed rifle) and the five women. Eddy also tried to save the Miwoks from Foster’s rifle, but Foster got to them first and later butchered them while Eddy and Mary Graves shot down a deer.
