Archaeology Notes. John Knox died on 24th November 1572. He was buried in St Giles’ Cemetery (NT27SE 6), and according to Laing (1864) his grave was unmarked, but there is reason to believe it was a little W of the statue of Charles II in Parliament Close.

In 1564 John Knox married Margaret Stewart, aged 17 and daughter of Andrew, lord Stewart of Ochiltree. They had three daughters Martha, Margaret and Elizabeth – all of whom are mentioned in his testament. John Knox died in Edinburgh on 24 November 1572.

Why was John Knox buried Glasgow?
It’s said that Knox wanted to be buried within 20 feet of Saint Giles, so he was laid to rest right outside the church in what was once a proper graveyard. However, the site has since been tarmacked over and is now a functioning parking lot.
