Our universe is about 13.8 billion years old, so most galaxies formed when the universe was quite young! Astronomers believe that our own Milky Way galaxy is approximately 13.6 billion years old. The newest galaxy we know of formed only about 500 million years ago.

We live on a planet called Earth that is part of our solar system. But where is our solar system? It’s a small part of the Milky Way Galaxy. A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems.

Current models suggest that the Galaxy was formed by a metal-poor protogalaxy, forming the halo and the bulge of the MW, with the beginning of star production. However, there is not enough material to form the disk(s*) yet: that’s where we are! Gas later starts falling in this protogalaxy, forming the disk.
