Who lived in Herstmonceux Castle?
In 1449 the estate passed to Sir Roger’s son who later became Lord Dacre. The Dacre family sold the estate to George Naylor in 1708 and in 1775 the Hare-Naylor family abandoned the Castle and moved into Herstmonceux Place, in the north-west corner of the park.

Herstmonceux is a village and civil parish in the Wealden District of East Sussex. The name ‘Herstmonceux’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘hyrst’ meaning ‘wooded hill’ as well as the name of the Monceux family who were lords of the manor there in the 12th century.

In the 15th century, Sir Roger Fiennes, a Monceux descendant, built Herstmonceux Castle, now the oldest brick building of note in the country, to replace the existing manor house. He also decided he didn’t want anyone using the track that passed the front of his new home.
