What is a temporary benchmark in surveying?

A temporary benchmark (TBM) is a fixed point with a known elevation used for level control during construction works and surveys. Nails in road seals, or marks on kerb & channel are commonly used as temporary benchmarks.

How do you set a benchmark elevation?

Calculating Elevation Using a Level Line

  1. HI (Height of the Instrument) = 100 ft + 5 ft = 105 ft. This simply tells us that the instrument is located at an elevation of 105 feet.
  2. Elevation of middle point = 105 ft – 6 ft = 99 ft.
  3. Elevation of new benchmark = 4.5 ft – 7.5 ft + 99 ft = 96 ft.
