What is a painful spasm called?

Dystonia is the name for uncontrolled and sometimes painful muscle movements (spasms).

What is the medical term for spasm?

Myoclonus is the medical term for brief, involuntary muscle twitching or jerking.

What is a spasm attack?

A coronary artery spasm is a sudden tightening of the muscles within the arteries of your heart. When this occurs, your arteries narrow and prevent blood from flowing to your heart. Coronary artery spasms are brief and temporary. However, they can potentially lead to further heart complications, such as a heart attack.

What causes random painful muscle spasms?

Overexercising, dehydration, and stress are the most common causes. The spasms happen when the muscle suddenly moves involuntarily. Muscle spasms may feel like a slight twitch or a painful cramp, and they can occur in the muscles in any part of the body.

What is dystonia of the feet?

Curled, clenched toes or a painful cramped foot are telltale signs of dystonia. Dystonia is a sustained or repetitive muscle twisting, spasm or cramp that can occur at different times of day and in different stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Where is dystonia?

Dystonia affects different people in varying ways. Muscle contractions might: Begin in a single area, such as your leg, neck or arm. Focal dystonia that begins after age 21 usually starts in the neck, arm or face and tends to remain focal or segmental.

What is a hemifacial spasm?

Hemifacial spasm is a nervous system disorder in which the muscles on one side of your face twitch involuntarily. Hemifacial spasm is most often caused by a blood vessel touching or pulsating against a facial nerve. It may also be caused by a facial nerve injury or a tumor.

What is a coronary spasm?

A coronary artery spasm is a temporary tightening (constriction) of the muscles in the wall of one of the arteries that sends blood to your heart. A spasm can decrease or completely block blood flow to part of the heart.

What do aortic spasms feel like?

Usually, if you feel chest pain from a coronary artery spasm, you will feel it under the sternum (breast bone), on the left. This pain is very intense, and it can feel like your chest is being squeezed. Occasionally, these sensations can spread to other parts of the body like the neck, arm, shoulder, or jaw.

What is neck spasm?

A neck spasm occurs when your neck muscles suddenly, involuntarily tighten. Your neck becomes painful and stiff, likely affecting the ability to turn your head. An awkward neck movement or stress-related muscle tension is often what triggers a neck spasm.

What is the difference between spasticity and dystonia?

Spasticity is clinically defined by velocity-dependent hypertonia and tendon jerk hyperreflexia due to the hyper-excitability of the stretch reflex. Spastic dystonia is the inability to relax a muscle leading to a spontaneous tonic contraction.
