What happens when a ignition coil goes bad?

One of the most common symptoms associated with a faulty ignition coil is engine performance issues. Faulty coils may cause the vehicle to experience misfires, a rough idle, a loss in power and acceleration, and a reduction in gas mileage. In some cases the performance issues may even result in the vehicle stalling.

Can I replace just one ignition coil?

You can, of course, change just one coil. However, as a mechanic, I’ve seen it so many times, when one coil fails, another isn’t too far behind. If your coils are easy to access, replacing them as they fail is OK, apart from the inconvenience. It is possible to drive a car with a faulty coil, but it isn’t advised.

Are ignition coils the same as spark plugs?

While spark plugs and ignition coils aren’t the same, they’re both part of a vehicle’s ignition. Or rather, part of a gasoline-powered vehicle’s ignition system. That causes a magnetic field to form in the ignition coil. At this point, the secondary ignition system comes into play.

What connects to the ignition coil?

The ignition coil connects to the rotor, and the rotor spins around inside the cap. The coil’s ground side connects to breaker points, which are connected by a lever to a cam in the middle of the distributor. When the lever is pushed by the cam, the coil loses its ground and creates its high-voltage pulse.

When an ignition coil pack or Ignition Control Module goes bad, on your 2.2L Chevy Cavalier or Pontiac Sunfire, the car will suffer a misfire condition or a ‘no spark no start’ condition. How does the ignition coil pack work?

Each ignition coil is fed power, in the form of 10 to 12 Volts, and a switching signal. These two signals are provided by the ignition control module (ICM). Now to test these two circuits, the ignition coil pack has to be removed and using the photos supplied in each test step, I’ll show how to test these Signals.
