Colors are considered dangerous in The Giver, just like emotions, feelings, memories and knowledge. This is because colors make people different, and the society we are introduced to previously made the decision of abolishing differences in order to help humanity.

The people in the society cannot actually see color; they have no memory of it. Jonas, who can see splashes of red on occasion, has a special gift in this area. The people can see shades of dark and light, however.
