Cushing’s syndrome, Marfan’s syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and other adrenal gland disorders can cause stretch marks by increasing the amount of cortisone in your body.
Can you get rid of striae?
Like any scar, stretch marks are permanent and may fade with time. Because stretch marks are caused due to a tear deep inside your skin, there is no absolute cure for it.
How are striae formed?
Striae are a form of dermal scarring associated with stretching of the dermis. They often result from a rapid change in weight (gain and loss) or are associated with endogenous or exogenous corticosteroids.
What causes striae stretch marks?
A stretch mark is a type of scar that develops when our skin stretches or shrinks quickly. The abrupt change causes the collagen and elastin, which support our skin, to rupture. As the skin heals, stretch marks may appear.
What are abdominal striae?
Stretch marks (striae) are indented streaks that appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks or other places on the body. They’re common in pregnant women, especially during the last trimester. Stretch marks aren’t painful or harmful, but some people don’t like the way they make their skin look.
How do you treat a striae Distensae?
Commonly cited treatments include topical treatments like tretinoin, glycolic acid, ascorbic acid and various lasers including (like) carbon dioxide, Er:YAG, diode, Q-switched Nd:YAG, pulse dye and excimer laser.
Why are my stretch marks purple?
When the connective fibers of your skin stretch too much, they can tear and leave a mark. This new scar may initially appear as red or purple from blood vessels seen through the skin. Over time, your stretch marks may fade into a silver or white hue and become more difficult to treat.

Striae gravidarum usually develop during the sixth and seventh months of pregnancy and often affect the lower abdomen (Fig. 22.4) and breasts. Incidence rates in pregnant women vary from 50% to 90%.
What causes striae gravidarum?
Striae gravidarum (stretch marks) occur in approximately 50% to 90% of pregnant women because of the separation of underlying connective tissue as the uterus enlarges within the abdominal cavity. Dermal collagen is damaged and blood vessels dilate, resulting in the formation of reddish-purple early stretch marks.
What does striae look like?
Mature striae are white, depressed, irregularly shaped bands, with their long axis parallel to the lines of skin tension (see the image below). They are generally several centimeters long and 1-10 mm wide. Gradually, some striae may fade and become inconspicuous.
