What causes white eye in cattle?
Pinkeye is caused primarily by the bacteria Moraxella bovis and can be carried between cattle on things like dust particles and the feet of flies. The bacteria are deposited on the clear surface of the eye – the cornea – and have the ability to grab on to ensure they can set up shop.
How do you know if your calf is blind?
Blind cattle may be seen circling, knocking into objects and have no menace response (i.e. they won’t blink when a hand is waved in front of their eye).
What causes eye problems in cattle?
Pinkeye is most often caused by Moraxella Bovis (M bovis), a bacterial organism. Although this is the most common bacteria that can cause pinkeyes in cattle, there are also some other potential causes. These include infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBR), mycoplasma bovis, and Moraxella bovoculi.
What causes newborn calf blindness?
Calves that are born alive from a cow with low vitamin A levels may be blind from micropthalmia or constriction of optic nerve, have deformed bone development or weak uncoordinated muscles leading to inability to nurse.
How do you treat eye problems in cattle?
Topical ophthalmic antibiotic cream containing cloxacillin is commonly used. Antibiotic injection (e.g. with penicillin or oxytetracycline) into the conjunctiva around the upper part of the globe can be very effective but is difficult to achieve in fractious cattle and requires good restraint.
What causes a calf’s eyes to water?
Common causes of eye discharges in export livestock are ocular irritants, foreign bodies or trauma, pinkeye, and in cattle, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) and malignant catarrhal fever.
What is septicemia calf?
When a calf has septicemia, it has disease producing organisms or their toxins in its blood. Septicemia in calves is usually the result of a bacterial infection that occurs while the calf is in the uterus, during, at or immediately after birth.
How do you treat an eye infection in a cow?
How can it be treated? Treatment usually involves a topical antibiotic ointment. Antibiotic injection (with penicillin or oxytetracycline) can also be administered into the eyelid. However, this can be more difficult to administer and requires excellent restraint of animals.
What does making calf eyes mean?

What causes pink eye cattle?
In cattle, pinkeye is mainly caused by Moraxella bovis, but may be associated with other bacteria including Mycoplasma and Neisseria. Pinkeye generally occurs when the bacteria are present and the animal suffers some form of irritation or trauma to the cornea from things such as dust, dryness or ultraviolet light.
Why are my calves eyes swollen and red?
Pressure could cause the swelling/fluid retention. IBR can cause calves to be born blind/with eye problems as the only symptom. Vit A deficiency/toxicity can interfere with eye development. Hydrocephalis (water on the brain) can also manifest in blindness and eye swelling.
What to do about cloudy eyes in calves?
Moderator. When a calf is born with cloudy eyes it is usually caused by Vit A deficiency. Personally, I would confirm the need for, and the dosage of, Vit A with your vet, then procede to treat the calf. If it is truly a Vit A deficiency, if you start the Vit A soon enough, the eyes may very well go ahead and finish developing.
What causes fluid retention in the eyes of calves?
Pressure could cause the swelling/fluid retention. IBR can cause calves to be born blind/with eye problems as the only symptom. Vit A deficiency/toxicity can interfere with eye development.
Why does my cow have one eye half blind?
It certainly could be something within the genetics. Another possibility is IBR, or infectious bovine rhinotracheitis. A cow infected with the virus during gestation can have affects on the fetus. I have a seen a few calves born with eye problems, be it blindness or hazey eyes.
