  1. Step One: Balance. Players should practice jumping up and down and landing each and every time in the same spot.
  2. Step Two: Elbow Position. The elbow needs to always be in towards the body.
  3. Step Three: Eyes on Target.
  4. Step Four: Follow Through.

1 – Shot Preparation. Being a great shooter starts before you receive the basketball.

  • Step#2 – Hand Placement on the Ball. Upon catching the basketball or raising up into a shot,players must be able to quickly adjust their hands to the correct
  • Step#3 – Balanced Base. “The key to being a good shooter is balance.
  • Step#4 – Feet Direction (The Turn) I could have included this in the ‘balanced base’ section above,but I feel that this is so important it deserved its own
  • Step#5 – Consistent Shot Pocket. The ‘shot pocket’ is the area a player is most comfortable starting the basketball from when beginning their shot.
  • Step#6 – Eyes on the Target. A while ago I asked 15 shooting coaches which part of the rim they encouraged players to focus on when shooting.
  • Step#7 – Wrinkle the Wrist. Shooting with a straight wrist is another one of the most common problems for youth players.
  • Step#8 – Elbow Under the Basketball. When you’re raising up for the shot,the elbow of your shooting arm should be directly under the basketball.
  • Step#9 – Balance Hand. The ‘balance hand’ is what we call the non-shooting hand.
  • Step#10 – Rhythm Shot+Follow Through. The final step is where it all comes together… The basketball is lifted up from the shot pocket.
  • How do you shoot a basketball?

    – Get your body square to the basket with equal weight on each foot and bend your knees slightly. – Bring the ball into the “lock and load” position. That means bringing the ball onto the fingertips of your shooting hand like a waiter holds a tray. – Lock in on your target with your eyes. Some players look at the back of the rim, others concentrate on a spot just over the front of the rim. – With your “guidance system” in order, push the ball straight up toward the basket until your arm extends completely and your elbow locks. – As you release the ball it should roll off your fingertips, producing back spin. Your middle finger usually has the last contact with the ball.
