Echoes can be useful or a nuisance. In a concert hall echoes can ruin a performance if the walls and ceiling are not properly designed. If the walls are too hard or too flat they make good reflecting surfaces for the sound waves. Echoes can be used to give vital information.

Why is it difficult to distinguish echoes in a classroom?

The classrooms are designed in such a way that the distance between the walls are less than 17.2 m. Due to this, the reflections of sound from to walls or echos reach our ears before 0.1 s. Because of this, we are not able to distinguish between the original sound and the echo produced in the classroom.

Why are echoes useful?

Echoes are used by bats, dolphins and fisherman to detect an object / obstruction. They are also used in SONAR (Sound navigation and ranging) and RADAR(Radio detection and ranging) to detect an obstacle.

Why echoes Cannot be heard in a small room class 9?

They can’t hear an echo in small room because in it the sound can’t be reflected back. For an echo of a sound to be heard,the minimum distance between the source of sound and the walls of the room should be 17.2 m. Obviously,in a small room echoes cannot be heard.

What are the disadvantages of sound waves?

Cons or Disadvantages of sound energy: Sound waves can not be seen and hence we can not pressure waves due to sound energy. Sound can not travel through the vacuum. The sound energy should be below a certain power level, otherwise, it can be annoying to human beings. Sound energy can break the glass.

What are advantages and disadvantages of reverberation?

When a sound is produced in a big hall, its wave reflects from the walls and travel back and forth. Due to this, energy does not reduce and the sound persists. Small amount of reverberation for lesser time helps in adding volume to the programmers. Too much reverberation confuses the programmers and must be reduced.
