- Turn the ignition key. If the engine does not turn over, either your battery is completely drained or your starter is bad.
- Open the hood. Wiggle the connections on your battery.
- Lightly tap the starter with a hammer a couple of times. Try starting the car again.

Can you jump a car with a bad alternator?
While jumpstarting a vehicle with a bad alternator may technically be possible, do not leave jumper cables connected between vehicles longer than necessary as it can result in damage to sensitive electronics.
Why a car won’t start?
A dead battery is the most common reason why your car won’t start. The battery is what the car uses to provide electrical power to the entire car and electrical components (e.g. lights, radio, etc.). While the vehicle is running, the alternator charges the battery.
Why does my car not start?
There are two main reasons for a car not starting. One is lack of spark, the other is lack of fuel. Lack of spark can be caused by a dead battery, a dead starter, a faulty ignition or bad spark plugs. A lack of fuel is usually the fuel pump or problems with the EFI system.
