How do windbags work?
The long bag quickly inflates because air from the atmosphere is drawn into the bag along with the stream of air from your lungs. When you blow into the bag, higher-pressure air in the atmosphere forces its way into the area of low pressure created by the stream of air moving into the bag from your lungs.
Why does the bag inflate more when it is blown into from a distance?
When you blow directly into the bag, the only air flowing into the bag is from your lungs. When you blow from a short distance away you create an air flow that also takes in the surrounding air, which is used to inflate the bag.
How does Bernoulli’s principle help in inflating the plastic bag?
Bernoulli’s Principle states that as the speed of air increases, its pressure decreases. When you blow a big breath near (but not on) the opening of the bag, you increase the speed of the air molecules and create an area of low air pressure.
How would you show that a gas occupies space?
Take a balloon and blow it up (fill it with air, that is, don’t explode it.) As the air enters the balloon from your lungs, the air (which is a gas) takes up space in the balloon. The balloon expands because the air inside needs to take up more space. So that is how you can see that air takes up space.
Why do potato chip bags expand?
As the atmospheric pressure decreases with increase in altitude, when a sealed bag of chips is taken to higher altitude then the pressure of the gases inside the bag become greater than the outer atmospheric pressure and apply pressure on the side covering of the chips bag due to which the chips bag expand.
Why does air occupy space?
How do we know that the air takes up space? As the air enters the balloon from your lungs, the air (which is a gas) takes up space in the balloon. The balloon expands because the air inside needs to take up more space. So that is how you can see that air takes up space.
Why do bags inflate in freezer?
The expansion is probably due to ice and not air. Vegetables contain water, and water expands when frozen. This expansion can cause the cell walls to break. Slight thawing may occur from a power outage, storing your vegetables in the door (the warmest part of the freezer), or constant opening of your freezer door.
Can air pass through plastic bags?
Although Ziploc bags do form a tight seal, the container is not entirely airtight. Because the interlocking grooves have minuscule spaces between them, air will eventually seep into the bag. The best way to ensure that you have airtight storage is to use a heat-sealing, vacuum-packed bag.
