Do horses penetrate the cervix?
The cervix of a mare, when in estrus (“heat”), is relaxed and has a glistening red appearance when viewed through a speculum. Often the relaxation is such that the cervix appears flattened and lying on the vaginal floor. Penetration of the cervical lumen is very easy at this time.
How deep is a horse cervix?
Basically a highly distensible muscle, the cervix is approximately 4 inches long and appears as a circle of folded tissue at the anterior surface of the vaginal vault.
What is horse caslick?
A Caslick’s, also known as vulvoplasty, is a common surgical procedure veterinarians perform on mares. For a mare to become pregnant and carry a foal, her uterus must remain sterile, or free from infection.
How do you open a caslick?
“About a week or two prior to her due date, she needs to have the Caslick opened up. If she bags up early, open the Caslick early.” To open the Caslick, the vulva is numbed and surgical scissors are used to separate the healed-together tissue, along the line of the suture scar.
What does a mares cervix feel like?
A ‘one’ cervix is tight and firmly closed; a ‘four’ cervix is open and relaxed. During ovulation, the open cervix provides a pathway for the sperm to reach the follicle. When a mare is not ovulating or is pregnant, the cervix will be closed.
Where are a mares ovaries?
Mares have two ovaries. The ovaries are situated in the dorsal (upper) part of the abdomen, just behind the kidneys. The ovaries are the female gonads and they produce and release eggs. They are also the site of production of the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

Vulvoplasty is a gender-affirming, lower body surgery that creates the vulva (including mons, labia, clitoris, and urethral opening) and removal of penis, scrotum, and testes.
Why are Caslicks used on mares?
Caslicks is an operation to partially suture together the lips of the vulva. Caslicks are used to prevent fecal contamination problems in mares that have abnormal vulva conformation. Mares that have a Caslicks must have the lips of the vulva opened at least 30 days prior to foaling.
Can a mare foal with a caslick?
A Caslick’s needs to be opened for foaling. Usually your veterinarian will have done a superb job placing the Caslick’s and this will form the strongest part of the vulva. When a mare foals, the foal will come through the path of least resistance.
What is caslick surgery?
A Caslick’s procedure is used to prevent fecal contamination and possible infection of the placenta in a pregnant mare. It’s also commonly used in mares with poor vulvar conformation to prevent aspiration of air and contamination of the vaginal cavity, which leads to uterine infection or endometritis.
Do mares have Proestrus?
During late March, April and May, most mares exhibit sexual receptivity, and from late April through August, most mares will cycle normally. Few early estruses result in ovulation; thus it is not recommended to breed mares during this time without rectal palpation of the ovaries to determine follicular development.
