Do crabs move fast?
Crabs can creep forward very slowly, but prefer to scuttle sideways because they can move much quicker that way. These crustaceans mostly have short, wide bodies. When they get too big for their shells, they split them open and shed them.

If you find what appears to be a dead crab on the surface next to an empty shell, have a closer look to see if it is just an exoskeleton. If it is hollow and crumbles easily, it is an old exoskeleton, and your hermit crab has already molted and moved on to a new shell.
Do hermit crabs move when molting?
Molting is the process by which a hermit crab grows. It involves shedding of the exoskeleton and for a short time afterward the crab is unable to move until it regains muscle control and the new exoskeleton hardens up.
