Do airlines still upgrade passengers?
Even though seats in business class may also be empty, the airlines don’t usually upgrade people for no reason. If the flight is full, your chances are better. Therefore, on a full flight the airlines sometimes are forced to upgrade people. In this scenario, if you have a good story, you may be lucky.
Can you upgrade flight seats?

How does military Space available flights work?
Space-available flights, a.k.a “MAC flights” or “military hops,” are military operational flights that have extra seats. The military mission is the priority, and the Space-A passengers are essentially cargo. Eligible travelers may “hop” the flight (free of charge), but the system is based on priority.
Why do airlines upgrade passengers?

Military hops are only available at certain bases and you never know where available planes may be going or how many seats will be available. I consider the ability to fly for free on military flights to be one of the best benefits for military families.
Can veterans fly free on military flights?
Military travel is a top benefit for veterans. Many veterans and their family members can travel for free on military aircraft by using the space-available travel program, often referred to as space A. Although this is a valuable benefit, space-A travel can often be frustrating, unless you follow these tips.
Can family members fly Space A?
Yes. Uniformed Services Retirees (receiving retirement pay and possessing a BLUE Retiree ID Card) and their accompanying dependents can travel Space-A anywhere that Space-A is allowed.
What is the space-available program?
The Space-Available travel program is a travel benefit that allows authorized passengers to occupy DoD aircraft seats that are surplus after all space-required passengers and cargo have been accommodated. Space-A travel is allowed on a non-mission interference basis only.
When can the traveler sign up for space-a?
The traveler can signup for Space-A on or after the EML start/effective date (listed on their EML form). Government Civilians (e.g. DoD Teachers) and their dependents stationed at certain overseas locations might be authorized EML and travel Space-A to authorized EML destinations as outlined in the documents above.
What is the difference between space-a and space-available travel?
Space-A travel is allowed on a non-mission interference basis only. Space-available travel is a privilege (not an entitlement) available to Uniformed Services members and their dependents.
Is space available travel allowed on military aircraft?
Space Available Travel is permitted, provided all space-required passengers and cargo have been accommodated. Space Available transportation is allowed on a non-interference basis only. DoD aircraft, including training missions, will not be scheduled or sized to accommodate the movement of passengers on a space-available basis.
