Why Atoms Combine – Atoms want to be stable. A stable atom is a happy atom! – Compounds are more chemically stable than the elements from which they were made.

What makes compounds stable?

A compound can be stable on its own, under the given conditions such as temperature and pressure. This is the case for a lot of compounds. The other definition of stable could be a compound’s inability to react with other molecules (like the inability of carboxylic acids to be oxidized).

What elements are stable on their own?

The noble gases are the chemical elements in group 18 of the periodic table. They are the most stable due to having the maximum number of valence electrons their outer shell can hold.

Why does bonding make elements more stable?

Atoms form chemical bonds to make their outer electron shells more stable. An ionic bond, where one atom essentially donates an electron to another, forms when one atom becomes stable by losing its outer electrons and the other atoms become stable (usually by filling its valence shell) by gaining the electrons.

How do you know if an element is stable or unstable?

Atoms found in nature are either stable or unstable. An atom is stable if the forces among the particles that makeup the nucleus are balanced. An atom is unstable (radioactive) if these forces are unbalanced; if the nucleus has an excess of internal energy.

Why does a compound have different properties to the elements in it?

The properties of compounds are different from the properties of the elements that form them—sometimes very different. That’s because elements in a compound combine and become an entirely different substance with its own unique properties. Do you put salt on your food? Table salt is the compound sodium chloride.

Why are some compounds unstable?

An atom can be considered unstable in one of two ways. If it picks up or loses an electron, it becomes electrically charged and highly reactive. Such electrically charged atoms are known as ions. Instability can also occur in the nucleus when the number of protons and neutrons is unbalanced.

How do you determine the stability of a compound?

Mechanical stability can be checked by computing the force constants (or the Hessian matrix of the energy second derivatives). If it is positive definite then your molecule is stable, meaning it will not deform as it is at its energy minimum. Chemical stability maybe checked by calculating the HOMO-LUMO gap.

What element is the most unstable?

Characteristics. Francium is one of the most unstable of the naturally occurring elements: its longest-lived isotope, francium-223, has a half-life of only 22 minutes.

Why is lower energy more stable?

Answer: From chemical point of view, a molecule will be stable if there are more attractive forces and less repulsive forces. Repulsive forces increases the potential energy of the molecule. Hence molecules with lower energy are more stable.

Why do elements become stable?

A complete octet is very stable because all orbitals will be full. Atoms with greater stability have less energy, so a reaction that increases the stability of the atoms will release energy in the form of heat or light. A stable arrangement is attended when the atom is surrounded by eight electrons.

Which element can achieve stability?

Helium (He), neon (Ne), and argon (Ar), as group 18 elements, have outer electron shells that are full or satisfy the octet rule. This makes them highly stable as single atoms. Because of their non-reactivity, they are called the inert gases or noble gases.
