The most common pool skimmer parts include skimmer baskets, skimmer cover, and the skimmer weir flap over which water flows. Above ground pool skimmers have a faceplate and gaskets to seal up to both sides of the pool wall.

You should aim for a water level about 1/2 to 2/3 up the opening of the skimmer. Too low and you start to get gurgling sounds which are telling you that your pump is working way too hard at trying to keep the water flowing.
Can you run pool pump if water is above skimmer?

Look for excessive air in the pump or a lot of air in the filter when you open the air bleed at the top. As for the basket floating, just use a rock to keep it down. The ‘flying saucer’ is to protect your plumbing in case your water level gets too low.

The saltwater chlorinator needs a sufficient flow of water for effective operation. A dirty skimmer basket, clogged or dirty filter, and a clogged pump strainer, can cause insufficient water flow for the chlorinator to produce less chlorine.
