What are the parts of a pool skimmer?
The most common pool skimmer parts include skimmer baskets, skimmer cover, and the skimmer weir flap over which water flows. Above ground pool skimmers have a faceplate and gaskets to seal up to both sides of the pool wall.
What does the skimmer flap do?
This means you skim more leaves and helps to increase the pool circulation. They also stop the debris in your skimmer basket from floating back into the pool when your pump switches off.
What are the 2 holes in my pool skimmer?
The second hole in the skimmer is connected to a pipe called an equalizer. It prevents the pump from taking in air if the pool’s water level dips below the skimmer opening. If the pool water is low the pump pulls water from the equalizer line so the pump doesn’t run dry.
Is it OK to put chlorine tablets in the skimmer?
Never put chlorine tablets into the skimmer baskets of your pool. High levels of chlorine close to the pool pump, pool filter, and pool heater can damage the equipment. The pool heater is especially susceptible to having the copper in the heater get into the pool and ruin the pool plaster.
Should pool water level be above skimmer?
Most pool professionals agree that the water level in both in-ground and above-ground pools should be at the midpoint of the pool skimmer. Too low, and water cannot flow into the filter system at all; too high and the flow will be less efficient.
How much suction should my skimmer have?
You should aim for a water level about 1/2 to 2/3 up the opening of the skimmer. Too low and you start to get gurgling sounds which are telling you that your pump is working way too hard at trying to keep the water flowing.
Can you run pool pump if water is above skimmer?
If the water level is too high the debris floating next to the opening may pass by without being pulled into the skimmer. However if the water level is too low it may cause the skimmer to suck air into the system. If this happens you may run the risk of burning up your pool pumps motor.

Why is my skimmer basket floating?
Look for excessive air in the pump or a lot of air in the filter when you open the air bleed at the top. As for the basket floating, just use a rock to keep it down. The ‘flying saucer’ is to protect your plumbing in case your water level gets too low.
Should chlorinator be full of water?
The saltwater chlorinator needs a sufficient flow of water for effective operation. A dirty skimmer basket, clogged or dirty filter, and a clogged pump strainer, can cause insufficient water flow for the chlorinator to produce less chlorine.
