What are the features of watershed?
A watershed consists of two major components, water and land, and is made up of many watercourses, including the land surrounding them, all of which drain into a specific point at a lower elevation (see Figure 1).

How would you describe a watershed?
A watershed is an area of land that drains or “sheds” water into a specific waterbody. Every body of water has a watershed. Watersheds drain rainfall and snowmelt into streams and rivers. Not all rain or snow that falls on a watershed flows out in this way.
What human activities can impact a watershed?
Building dams and rerouting rivers are two examples of ways humans directly impact water in watersheds. Humans also use water as a resource, drawing from watersheds for our drinking water.
What can we do to help watersheds?
In Your Community:
- Volunteer with your local environmental organizations.
- Pick up trash; participate in trash clean-up days.
- Help plant trees or seagrass, or remove invasive vegetation.
- Don’t litter: streets and storm drains empty into rivers and streams that drain into our estuaries.
- Pick up your pet’s waste.
Why do they call it watershed?
But, the word was originally a geographical term describing the area from which water sources drain into a single river or a ridge, like that formed by a chain of mountains, which sends water to two different rivers on either side. From that, watershed came to mean a turning point or dividing line in life.
How do we protect watersheds?
Conserve water every day. Take shorter showers, fix leaks & turn off the water when not in use. Don’t pour toxic household chemicals down the drain; take them to a hazardous waste center. Use hardy plants that require little or no watering, fertilizers or pesticides in your yard.
How does watershed impact your way of living on a daily basis?
Healthy watersheds provide critical services, such as clean drinking water, productive fisheries, and outdoor recreation, that support our economies, environment and quality of life. They are influenced by naturally varying lake levels, water movement to and from groundwater, and amount of stream flow.
