As part of a 1992 bond, Charleston County Parks was able to purchase the 1.4 acres of beachfront property on Folly. Nearly 20 years after the previous pier burned down, we opened the Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier on July 4, 1995.

Why is it called Bull Island?
The island is noted also for its hares and its mice. As for the name of the island, it derives from the Irish name for Clontarf, Cluain Tairbh, or Meadow of the Bull. Before the harbour walls were built, the sound of the waves crashing on the shoreline was said to have resembled a bull bellowing.
