How do you regroup the hundreds and the tens?
Sometimes you need to regroup the hundreds and the tens. Three-hundred fifty-two minus one-hundred eight-five equals… umm… Place value disks can help us figure it out! Subtract ones from ones first. But we can’t take away five ones! We only have 2 ones! So, let’s regroup. Trade in one ten for ten ones. Now we can take away five ones.
How many ten ones can be regrouped to make a hundred?
10 ones can be regrouped to make a ten, 10 tens can be regrouped to make a hundred and 10 hundreds can be regrouped to make a thousand. Regrouping is needed when there is 10 or more in any place value column of a number. We count ten ones and regroup them into a ten. We carry this ten over from the units column into the tens column.

So, let’s regroup. Trade in one ten for ten ones. Now we can take away five ones. Seven ones are left. Next, subtract tens from tens. We have four tens and we need to take away eight tens.
