When was Horsetooth Reservoir built?
In 1937, construction of the Horsetooth Reservoir dams began as part of the Big Thompson Project to bring western slope water to Colorado’s developing Front Range. Construction was completed in 1949 and the reservoir began to fill in 1951, reaching full capacity by 1956.

The park is currently open to hunting. Hunting is prohibited at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, adjacent to Lory State Park to the south, please be aware of boundary lines. Blaze orange is required of big and small game hunters. Hunters are required to register at the Visitor Center PRIOR to hunting.
Is Lory State Park free?
There is a fee of $7 per vehicle per day. This is also good for walking and riding access to neighboring Horsetooth Mountain Open Space. Information about annual passes can be found on the Colorado State Parks Website.
