Where did Léonin live?
The French composer known as Léonin or Magister Leoninus is said to have been active in Paris in the second half of the 12th century, associated with the new church of Notre Dame.

Leonin, Perotin, and the composers from the Notre Dame School contributed greatly to the development of modern music. The use of modal rhythms in the discant style that the Notre Dame School pioneered called for developing new music notation.

Léonin evidently composed his organa for the Cathedral of Notre Dame, whose present magnificent stone structure rose in the main between 1163 and 1208. It has been suggested that he was a choirboy first and later became the master of the choirboys.

Little is known about the life of Perotin. His birth date is probably between 1155 and 1160 but his death date is unknown and can only be estimated. He worked in a church called “Beatae Mariae Virginis” and later worked as a choirmaster in the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

Actually, the musical style of organum is in itself a fantasy on Gregorian chant; Perotin’s organum is built over a plainchant Alleluia (which is played by the winds in octaves over driving drum rhythms in the middle of Nativitas!).
